Madison County is home to some 13,660 people.  It’s county seat is the city of Madisonville. Madison County was founded in 1853 and named after President Madison. Madison County also contains the unincorporated community of North Zulch.

Madisonville

Located in the Piney Woods region just 40 miles from Texas A&M University is the city of Madisonville.  Around 4300 people live in the city, which serves as the county seat of Madison County. It’s also known as “The Mushroom Capital of Texas.”

Shopping & Dining

There’s plenty of places to shop and dine in the downtown square. You’ll find boots and Western wear, home décor, antiques, art, jewelry and more. Vintage Finds is where you can find interesting gifts and collectibles. If you’re looking for western tack and home décor, you’ll find a great selection at Nettles Country Store.

For outstanding home cooking in a beautiful historic setting, the Woodbine Hotel and Restaurant is the perfect place to spend an evening. TX Burger offers up your good old fashioned burgers, hand-dipped ice cream, and real ice cream shakes. And of course you have to have a great steakhouse in Texas, and Texas Legends Steakhouse, with “Steaks So Tender, We Wonder How the Cow Ever Walked!" Other great restaurants in Madisonville include Larry's Country-style BBQ, McKenzie's Barbeque, Shrimpy’s Seafood, and more.

Parks & Recreation

Madisonville has a couple of outstanding parks for all to enjoy. Lake Madison is a 247-acre park with facilities for softball, picnics, parties, and just enjoying the outdoors. There’s also a splash pad to keep you cool in the summer, along with a playground.  Marian Anderson Park is the newest park in the city and features a walking trail and basketball court.

Education

The Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District serves the students living in Madisonville with 4 schools, covering all grade levels in the form of an elementary, intermediate, jr. high, and high school.
