Leon County Real Estate & Community Information

Leon County, with Centerville as its county seat, is home to over 16,000 Texans.  Leon County was formed in 1846 and named after the founder of Victoria, namely Martín De León.  Locals, however, believe it was named after a yellow wolf that lives in the region that is called “leon” in Spanish. The first county seat was in Leona and moved to Centerville in 1851.  Leon County’s main cities and towns include Buffalo, Centerville (county seat), Jewett, Leona, and Marquez, Normangee, the Census-designated place, Hilltop Lakes, and the unincorporated community of Flynn.

Centerville is the county seat of Leon County and has a population of over 900 residents. Centerville was aptly named due to its location near the geographic center of the county, along with coincidentally being halfway between Houston and Dallas.

Residents of Centerville have a number of convenient places to shop and eat.  Several antique stores and florists, along with thrift stores dot the city. There’s also great dining choices, such as Broken Star, a local favorite that serves outstanding American and Czech food.  And you’ll find no shortage of BBQ with restaurants like Woody's Smokehouse, Country Cousins Barbecue, and Cactus Jack's Bar-B-Q.

If you want to enjoy the great outdoors, then Fort Boggy State Park is the perfect place to go swimming, fishing, hiking or mountain biking. You can also reserve the group pavilion for picnic or events. The 15-acre lake is ideal for small boats, canoes, and kayaks.

Students living in Centerville attend schools in the Centerville Independent School District. The district manages an elementary school and a Jr.-Sr. High School.
