Grimes County Real Estate and Community Information

Grimes County is located in Texas adjacent to Brazos County and is home to over 26,000 residents. It was named after a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and settler named Jesse Grimes. Grimes County contains the cities of Anderson (county seat), Bedias, Iola, Navasota, and Todd Mission.  There also 5 unincorporated communities located in the county, namely Apolonia, Richards, Roans Prairie, Shiro, and Stoneham.

We serve the following cities and communities:

Anderson

Anderson is the county seat of Grimes County with a population of around 222 residents. The Anderson Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally named Fanthorp, Anderson was named after a vice-president of the Republic of Texas named Kenneth Lewis Anderson who died at Fanthorp Inn in 1845. Anderson is interesting that it’s the county seat, despite its small population and the fact that it’s close to the largest city in the county, Novasota.

The Grime County Courthouse is also of note, as it’s one of the most visually pleasing courthouses in the state of Texas.  The courthouse has withstood 2 fires and was restored in 2002.

Students living in Anderson attend schools in the Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District.

Bedias

Bedias is located 30 miles northeast of Navasota, with around 443 residents. It was named after the Bidai Indians.  People started settling the area in 1835, and the first post office was established around 1847. In 1927 a huge fire destroyed most of the town’s business section, but it was soon rebuilt.

The Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District serves the students living in Bedias.

Iola

Home to some 400 residents, Iola is located at the headwaters of Ragan Creek in northwest Grimes County. Named after Edward Ariola who settled the area in 1836, Iola became an incorporated city in 2007. The population peaked to 500 by 1936, but declined to 300 after WWII, and has remained about the same ever since.

There are two schools located in Iola, Iola High School and Iola Elementary School.  They are both in the Iola Independent School District.

Navasota

Known as "The Blues Capital of Texas", Novasota is the largest city in the county with a population of over 7476.  It’s located east of the Navasota River in the southwestern part of the county. Founded in 1831 as Nolansville, it served as a stagecoach stop at the time.  In 1858 the name was changed to Navasota, possible derived from the Native American word nabatoto.  Navasota quickly grew to become an important shipping and marketing center for the area.  Today, modern Navasota is home to 23 companies that provide over 1200 jobs.  The city was also named "Train Town USA" by the Union Pacific Railroad in 2012.

Shopping and dining in Navasota is an eclectic adventure, with a variety of interesting places to shop.  In addition to standard grocery and discount stores such as Arlan’s Market,  Brookshire Brothers, and Walmart, there’s a variety of specialty and antique shops to choose from. Some of the antique shops include Bluebonnet Vintage Collectables, Circle P Antiques, Pink Champaign Antiques, Tejas Antiques, and Vintage 105.

There’s also a great selection of restaurants in Navasota.  For great steaks, there's Cow Talk Steak House with their legendary chicken fried steaks, as well as Wrangler Steakhouse. The BBQ scene is covered nicely by Mallett Brothers BBQ and Palmer’s Soul Food and BBQ.

The educational needs of the residents of Navasota are covered by 6 schools in the Navasota Independent School District. There are 3 elementary schools – Brule, High Point, and John C. Webb, along with a junior high and high school.
